Hunter 82032 Energy Star 110 CFM Bathroom Fan, White Review

We just bought a twenty year old house and its most pressing need was the master bath fan. All three bathrooms have the same old model in them, a very loud and the most basic (and cheap!) fan you could pick up at any home improvement store for twenty or so bucks. Well, the master bath one was on its last legs...and sounded like a jet engine when running, if it even ran when you flicked the switch. It would let the entire house know that the room was in use.
This fan by Hunter exceeded expectations. It is so quiet that I originally thought it wasn't even working after installing and turning it on. I had to get nearer to hear it, and then even tested it with some paper towels (held up to the grill). In fact, the fan is so quiet that it will not "hide unpleasant noises" from the bathroom anymore, so keep that in mind. Trying not to be redundant but this is the quietest bath fan I have ever heard, yet it is strong enough that we finally don't have a steamed window and mirror after using the shower.
Two other points to note are that the grill cover is almost 2 inches longer on all sides than the unit, so it will cover up any mistakes or possible issues nicely. Be aware though that this unit was about 4 inches "taller" (height above the ceiling) than the cheap-o model it replaced.
As one other reviewer mentioned, this model can be installed without access from above, although it may not be as secure.
I highly recommend this bath fan, even for the price.

I bought one of these filters at Walmart and it does not fit my Bissell Healthy Home Vacuum cleaner. The top clip is about 3/32 too long. I picked this up for $16.99 (shipped) from "It's Your Stuff".For this price, it is an EXCELLENT value.I'm not sure it's worth $50 like most sellers ask for it, but that also may just be me.Anyway, it looks significantly nicer than it does in the photos.It's my first humidor, and I'm honestly not much of a smoker, but this seems like it would suit well even a more seasoned enthusiast.The cutter it comes with is cheap, but that's the only con I can see as of yet.For the price I got this at, I would HIGHLY recommend it.

Honeywell 17000 Permanent Pure HEPA QuietCare Air Purifier Review

As someone who is highly allergic to cigarette smoke and other air pollutants and irritants, I purchased a round Honeywell HEPA air filter when it first came on the market several years ago. It still works well in the living room, but it is quite noisy even on its lowest setting.
This year I purchased another Honeywell air cleaner with a HEPA filter (Model 17400) for my bedroom because I had contacted bacterial pneumonia last year and wanted to make sure I did not get it again. Next, I purchased this Honeywell 17000 Air Cleaner (with HEPA filter) for use in a smaller bedroom which has been turned into a home office and library.
These air cleaners really work! This winter I have not had a cold or flu. Also, this Honeywell Air Cleaner with HEPA filter is whisper soft, and I have had no problems with sleeping, working, reading, watching tv, or listening to music when it is running on the low and medium settings. I leave it on all the time, and I've found that it cleans the air best when the door is closed.
It has a convenient handle on the top, so I can move it to another room quite easily. Also, it is light enough that I can take it with me in the car if I want to use it away from home.
The prefilters last about 3-6 months, (and they can be vacuumed often if you have pets who shed). I change my HEPA filter every year, but you can wait 3 years to do so. These filters are easy to change. The Model 17000 is for a smaller room, and the Model 17400 is for a larger space.
Highly recommended for anyone who has pets, who lives with or entertains people who smoke, and who is allergic to dust, molds, or pollens.

Hunter 82030 Energy Star 70 CFM Bathroom Fan, White Review

The directions are very clear and easy to follow, covering all the possible scenarios.When I finished installing this fan and a new switch, I turned it on and ... nothing.I thought I'd done something wrong with the wiring until I looked closely and saw the fan spinning.It is that quiet.When I put the flex duct on the output there is now the noise of the air in the duct, but it is still very quiet and can barely be heard outside the bathroom.I think if I used a rigid duct or a larger diameter duct, that noise could be minimized.

Honeywell 32005847-001 Installation Kit, Bypass Review

I purchased this to go along with my whole house humidifier cause Honeywell doesn't give you all the stuff you need with the humidifier.However, read up on what is included and what is not.I bought a seperate humidistat because I thought I needed one but there is actually one in the humidifier package.Most modern furnaces don't need the separate transformer and sail switch that come in this kit. You can find the schematics online for your furnace if you don't have the manual it came with to wire to the 24v output on the control board in the furnace unit and not have to use the sail switch and 24v transformer. Hence, I'd recommend buying the water tubes and ducting at a hardware store. I would imagine that if I'd thought ahead far enough I could have found the 5" duct and hoses for around $20 or less and saved myself some money. My mistake is your lesson here I guess.

Air King 3-Speed Digital Recirculating Humidifier #9929 Review

I am in Anchorage where the winters are very dry.Since I've bought this, it has been running just about 24/7 for the past 2.5 months.The filter is fine and there are no issues with mold or anything.The one problem that I've had with it is that when it runs out of water, it keeps running, trying to suck up water that isnt there.There is no real auto shut off switch.It isnt a big problem with us since we just keep refilling it often and you will hear it running all the time and that will prompt you to check it out and refill it.Otherwise, I am really happy.We keep it in our foyer which is in the 2nd floor of the house and keep the fan on above it so it goes upstairs and downstairs.There are no issues with droplets like the mist ones have.So good so far.

Hunter 82042 Energy Star Bathroom Fan with Light, White Review

This fan is very quiet, but the description is bad, design is fair, and looks are fair.

- There is no way to turn off the night light. I assumed it would turn off when it was light in the room, but it does not. You can get a $2 night light that turns on/off with a light sensor, so why can't they put such a sensor on a $150 fan? I replaced the 4w incandescent night light with an LED since you can't turn it off and I don't want to have to replace the thing every month.

- The housing is not designed for installation into an existing hole. The hole needs to be much bigger than the housing due to the duct attachment point and very deep housing. I had to remove the duct and re-install with much difficulty once the housing was in place in the ceiling. The housing is 8" deep, making it a tight or even impossible fit in any place except a top floor bath.

- The grille is approximately 12x13 at the largest point, and the grille is curved, so it is about 10x11 at the corners. The 14.75" x 14.75" shown in the manufacturer's description might be including the box it came in. I don't know where they got that measurement.

- The light bulbs are low energy CFL with a two-prong conductor that I have never seen before. I checked my local big box store and could not find a replacement bulb. I hope the bulbs last a long time. What's wrong with a normal light bulb fixture?

- The design is ugly, kind of like a bulging belly sticking to your ceiling.

I specifically selected this model based on the advertised grille dimensions, hoping to cover up the hole from the old fan. Had I been able to get my hands on the thing in a store, I would never have purchased it. There was no store within 100 miles that had this fan, so I purchased based on the description. Amazon/manufacturer need to accurately describe the items they sell.

This is a disappointing purchase, especially at this price, but I decided to go ahead with the install since I have to assume that the other descriptions will be just as inaccurate and our old fan was already pulled. 2 stars only because it is very quiet.

Soleus Air CFM-40 E 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Humidistat Review

I installed this unit in my basement about 8 months ago, and it has been working flawlessly ever since.

Things I noticed:

If the power goes out, the unit will NOT turn back on automatically (as some other units do.)

If you want to use the continuous drainage (which I highly recommend) via a hose, you have to punch out a plastic disc on the side of the unit.I would have designed a screw-type plug that was replacable, but they didn't think of that.Anyway, once you punch the quarter-size disc out it's out forever.

If you choose to use the continuous drainage feature, you will need to pick up a hose with an inner diameter of 15mm (.59" or just over half an inch.)I went to the local DIY center and found some clear tubing that has worked well.

The unit can operate down to 2-degrees C (36-degrees F), which will be great for continuous operation in the garage to keep the tools from rusting.

Has three fan settings: med, high and quiet."Quiet" really is quiet, and could probably work just fine in a bedroom.Though, it does warm the room it's in.How much it warms it depends on the humidity setting.

Four settings: The humidty level (humidstat) can be set to "continuous dehumidification" (which is the default setting), 50%, 60% and 70%.The fan will continue to run but the dehumidification processor will turn off when it reaches the selected humidity level.Cool.I mean, that's when the fan will just blow room-temp air.

A full drainage tank will stop the unit and illuminate a "tank full" indicator light.

The unit is not that heavy -- maybe for some, but not nearly as heavy as some people make it sound.It's 30.8 pounds.

According to the instructions: You will need at least 21 cm (about 8 inches) of clearance in front, behind and side to side.Air blows out of the top of the unit, so you'll need to make sure it's clear as well.

There are movable louvers on the top to direct the air straight up, 45-degrees or almost straight ahead.

Power consumption: CFM-25E is 220W//CFM-40E is 330W

I highly recommend this model dehumidifier.

***15-month UPDATE:It is still working like a champ!We haven't had one single problem with it, and I don't foresee ever really having one in the near future.I've been running this thing nonstop and it has only required me to clean the filter on the back (which takes 5 minutes.)It has remained as quiet as the day I bought it.It's awesome!

The drawback of using this method is that the unit becomes less effective the more humid the room gets, unlike a steam-type humidifier which will keep putting out the same amount of moisture until shut off.I guess one could look at it one way and say that the unit will not over-humidify a room, but it also means that if one desires a high humidity level, that level will be very difficult to reach.

So, the good things about the unit:

The unit has a small footprint, which is nice.It also has a decently sized tank which lasts a while for us.Like the previous reviewer, we also live in the Northeast, and I can tell you that right now in the Winter, it is VERY dry here.25% humidity or so.We got this unit to improve conditions for both of us because we were waking up with dry throats, and to ease conditions for my wife who has intermittent asthma.The unit has 6 settings:Low/Medium/High and humidistat controlled Low/Medium/High.The humidistat will allow you to set the unit to turn off/on just like a thermostat for your heater when a desired humidity is reached.Under humidistat control using the low setting, a tank of water will last about a day and a half, which is pretty good for us.Some folks have complained about the fan noise on this model and it's silver sister model, but it doesn't bother us at all on low.I guess if you're used to a dead quiet room, it might be an issue, but we prefer a very small amount of white noise in the background.The unit comes with 2 extra filter pairs, which is nice (1 pair required in the unit).

The not so great things about the unit:

It must be on a completely level surface, or the water in the tray can spill.It is NOT a cool mist humidifier, as the name indicates.It has a little meter on the top that tells you when the filter must be cleaned.The indicator must be completely arbitrary or useless, I haven't figured it out yet.Sometimes it says the filter must be cleaned as soon as the unit is turned on and then indicates "good" after 5 minutes.Sometimes with a completely new filter and no water, it says they need to be cleaned.We just clean the filters once a week and call it good.The humidistat has issues with reading/indicating the correct humidity I've read in other reviews, ours seems to be OK.Just something to keep in mind.The nice large tank has no handle to hold while filling, and because of the length of the tank you'll need to fill it in your bathtub most likely.Because of the lack of a handle, be careful not to drop the tank as it is prone to cracking (as other reviewers have found out).

Overall:

We like the unit for the price.It does humidify the room, but not as well as a true "mist" or steam type of humidifier.The filters are a bit of a pain, but the high end humidifiers all have more expensive filter systems, so this one is cheap in comparison.The faulty filter meter is a negative, and the fact that the name is very misleading is a huge negative (-1 star for that alone). Don't get me wrong, we'd probably get this unit again, we just feel that the misleading product title (in our opinion) is bad for consumers; and there should be some design changes, such as a handle on the tank for filling.So feel free to buy the unit, just realize what your are really getting!

Vornado AQS-15 PreSorb Replacement Filters Review

Some of HEPA filter units put the carbon behind the HEPA filter, and some put it in front. The Vornado has the carbon as a pre-filter, saving the expensive HEPA portion for particulates. I find I change the carbon filter rather often, and so a four-pack for me is a sensible idea. I absolutely notice when the carbon has loaded with whatever muck is in the air. Then it's time to install a new one, which is not terribly difficult. I'd rather not have the HEPA filter pick up volatile components from the air, so I'd say this pre-filter works very well.

I've had this product for over a year.It is easy to clean and works as it is supposed to.It is great for a large bedroom.It does not have enough capacity to humidify your entire house, unless you live in a very small ranch.In the winter in my New England home, I refill it about every day, sometimes twice a day.It has the ability to put a good amount of moisture into the air.I believe it is rated to humidify about 1000 sq ft.

The only complaint I have is that the highest fan setting is almost unusable - it is very noisy.

on the lowest fan setting, not enough moisture is put into the air, but it is very quiet.It might be OK if you had it on the lowest setting and the unit was in an enclosed bedroom.If you are trying to humidify more than one room, the lowest fan setting isn't enough.

Overall the unit works as it is supposed to except for the noise on the highest fan setting.

Crane Five Stage Air Purifier Review

My son's room was always smelly and musty (from carpet, diaper pail, hamper and don't know what else).The air just felt dirty.So I bought this purifier (because it's adorable and good price).I've had it for one week and have definitely noticed a difference in the air quality.The air smells fresher and feels easier to breathe in there.The noise level is very quiet when you have it on low.You can put it on Medium or High when you are away or you need to quickly clean the air - on these higher settings it's very loud but thankfully the low setting is quiet.The only negatives - the blue UV light is VERY BRIGHT.I have to turn the shark away from the crib at night because it's so bright.Overall, I am happy with this purchase!!

UPDATE:I've had this purifier for almost one year now and am still very happy with it!It captures a lot of dust/dirt (apparent from the dirty filter) and the room always smells clean.If I ever turn it off for a long period of time I can notice the musty smell return but it quickly disappears once I turn the filter back on.I finally cut out two small pieces of dark duct tape and put it over the SUPER BRIGHT LED light and now it's not a problem.Very happy.

3M FAPF02 Filtrete Ultra Cleaning Filter Review

We've been running two of these units at home for six months now.The amount of garbage they pull out of the air is amazing.The unit is reasonably quiet on setting 2 and much too loud on 3.I'm not sure it is moving enough air on setting 1 to accomplish much.

The only disappointment is the high price of the filters -- if you can find them.Online sources are much more reasonable, but availability seems spotty.I'm hoping this will improve moving forward.

Unless you enjoy exercises such as stand, sit, squat, bend, lift and carry do not buy this poor excuse for an air conditioner/heater.We made the mistake of buying the Soleus Air and it has been nothing but problems for us.It actually works as far as making the room cool or heating it, but be prepared to constantly jump up every 15 minutes to bend down and empty the water tray.And I'm not talking about the tray that is supposed to be in the machine, evaporating the water - I'm talking about you putting a baking sheet or low lying pan behind the machine so it can catch the water pouring out of the hose in the back.If you don't put a tray there, you will have water all over your floor, destroying your hardwood floors just as mine are now ruined.

I have never hated an inanimate object but now I do - I hate Soleus and I would imagine that could be extended to most, if not all, portable air conditioners.We even spent another $75 and bought a water pump, thinking if we hooked that up it could redirect the water out the window but guess what, the RETARDED Soleus is so poorly designed that unless you are a carpenter that can build a strong stand to put the machine on in order to get the space needed to fit the pump into the situation, that won't work either.Oh, and forget the Owner's Manual!It doesn't tell you anything about the water nightmare and what you can do to make the machine work better (because there are no answers to that problem!).Nor does it even tell you how to work the stupid remote and if you make the mistake and use it, the timer gets messed up and keeps turning off the machine every 30 minutes.

Don't buy a nightmare - buy anything other than a Soleus Air and/or portable A/C - you are better off buying a window A/C or a good old fashioned fan!

Air-O-Swiss Digital Air Washer - Black (2055D) Review

When I first began running this humidifier, I was thrilled with the results...for about two weeks. Unfortunately, when the cleaning light blinked for the first time, I cleaned the machine, and it has never operated properly since those first two weeks. The humidity now does not rise above 30%, even though it was initially getting up to 60%. The Air-O-Swiss toll-free number has a twenty minute wait, and when I did finally get in touch with an operator, their suggestions were straight out of the user's manual, all of which I had already tried. As a major allergy sufferer, I was *very* excited to find this model initially, since it does not require any moldy filters, and is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also extremely quiet, easy to fill, and, it seemed, high-functioning. But I've been struggling to improve the performance of this machine for weeks, and have severe doubts about whether it's worth the extreme price tag. And considering that cleaning the base and the filters is such a time-consuming chore (every two weeks, at least), I would have trouble recommending such an expensive product.

Honeywell 32001876-001 Solenoid Valve Kit Review

I thought a bad solenoid was the problem with my Honeywell humidifier.It wasn't.A hard water deposit had plugged a the pinhole sized inlet on the fitting that goes into my solenoid.Once I turned off the power and water, remove the water line and the inlet fitting; I cleaned out the pinhole and the little black screen inside the silver fitting and could blow through it.Put it all back together and the solenoid was was working like a champ again.It is awesome that this solenoid is available here, just make sure that that is really the problem first.I fixed mine for $0.00.

Bionaire BDQ24-UC 20-Pint Dehumidifier, White Review

I live in an old house outside San Francisco where there is no central air or heating. During the summer, we leave the windows open because the weather is perfect, but in the winter and fall, we close up -- unfortunately, this means having a damp house because the bathroom and kitchen never dry up. Humidity was a new problem for me and I had never purchased a dehumidifer before, so I crossed my fingers and bought the Bionaire BDQ24-UC.

My first impression was "wow, it's bigger than I thought" (of course, this was my fault for not reading the dimensions on Amazon before ordering). However, it really isn't all that imposing. It fits neatly into our tiny bathroom, and doesn't stick out at all.

Secondly, the thing works like a champ. The economy mode is great for us, because we'd like to keep utilities low AND let our towels dry at night. The first night we had it on, it pulled out about 2-3 cups of water, and brought the relative humidity down to 50% from about 78%, on a night where it was about 50 °F. From my perspective, this was an overnight fix.

As far as the noise, I'm a very light sleeper; a drip from the bathroom faucet next to our bedroom will keep me up at night. The Bionaire is pretty quiet-- it's similar in volume to a window-unit air conditioner. So it doesn't keep me up at night, and I can watch movies in the next room without really noticing.

I gave it four out of five stars because the humidistat lags a bit (~20 min) when in economy mode -- while this really is not a big deal for me, I could imagine that a different design might work better for those who need an instant response. I can't attest to its long-term reliability because I only have the experience of a few weeks, but if you're concerned about that, then it does have a 2-year warranty. It ships with a receipt from Amazon, so be sure to hang on to that. Best of luck!

UPDATE (Jan. 2008): Two years later, it works great. A month ago, it seemed like it wasn't sensing the humidity so well. It turns out the air filter was clogged-- oops, I hadn't cleaned it since I bought it! I washed the filter in the sink and put it back on the machine still wet. Works like it did on day one. I recommend it very much still, and if I could give it 4.9 stars, I would.

EdgeStar High Velocity Portable Air Cooler Fan with Humidifier Review

This cooler works great! I bought it for my husband to use in our 2-car garage. We're in Sacramento where most of the summer is in the 90s, with plenty of 100+ degree days. He works on cars so he has to leave the large garage door open for ventilation. Cooling the garage with such a large open area is definitely above and beyond what this is designed/expected to do, but I thought it was worth a try.

We've been impressed at just how well it works. According to the temperature gun it's typically about 10-15 degrees cooler than the outside air (depending on humidity and how long the cooler's been running). It works even better with ice in the reservoir, which drops the temperature another 10 or so degrees. There have been days when the garage is actually cooler than the house, thanks to this cooler.

Normally we use the "swing" setting to cool the whole garage, and it works well.On extra hot days, it works great to turn off the "swing" and point the fan directly at you.

The only downside is that it's very noisy. The noise doesn't matter in the garage, but in the house it's pretty noticable. We tried sleeping one night using the cooler to save on A/C costs. It was nice and cool, but the noise drove me crazy. The fan noise was fine on low, but the water dripping kept me awake. If you're a sound sleeper and/or like the dripping water sound it might be fine.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone in a dry climate who's looking for a relatively inexpensive cooling solution, especially if noise is not a factor.
