This is a bottle of citric acid (the stuff that makes lemons sour) with a wetting agent that helps dissolve the minerals (scale, calcium carbonate) that deposit on the evaporator (the moving white plastic finned drum) of the AIRWASHER. MAF-1 Emerson MoistAIR Humidifier Replacement Filter Review

I also received a BestAir brand, not the MoistAIR brand as advertised....
It's shorter than the Kenmore Brand I should be using, but it works well in our humidifyer. It has a wire-type exterior 'frame' for better reinforcement, and it costs much less than the Kenmore Brand. This, combined with the humidifyer treatment I found for $2 a bottle at Walmart makes a much less expensive way to keep our home humidity up. Keep in mind that you must use humidifyer treatment if your filter gums up or becomes yellow and hardens...that means you have hard water and the water cannot wick up the filster. The life of your filter will be dramatically less if you don't use a treatment.

Holmes HM630-U Tower Humidifier Review

In the past, I have been very disappointed with humidifiers.Either they leak or don't seem to do much of anything.However, this Holmes U Tower humidifier is sleek in design and has a few nice features such as:

- The two filters are easily accessible at the base of the unit.

- The tank is easy to handle, fill, and not too heavy to carry. If you have a small sink, you can always fill this slightly long tank in the bathtub or by using a teapot or water jug.

- You have the option to set the humdifier manually on low, medium, or high humidity continuously or you can set it to automatically go on at low, medium, or high at a pre-set humidity level. If you use the automtic feature, then the unit cycles on and off like a thermostat would (although it does that too frequently for my taste).

- In addition, the display shows the humidity of the room the unit is in, which is a nice feature.

- The humidity level increases pretty fast, which is not typical of other units I've experienced.

- According to the manual (I haven't tried this feature), you also have an hour timer option of setting the unit to turn on or off after so many hours.This means, for example, you can program it to turn off 5 hours later or turn on 5 hours later.

- The unit has a small footprint (see cavaet below), so it doesn't take up much floor space.

With regard to the operation of the unit, you must remember to press and hold the on/off button to turn off the unit.If you unplug the unit, the humidifier returns to its factory default settings so you'll have to quickly reprogram it every time.This is exceptionally easy to do, but some might find this annoying.

One very nice feature that remains in operation when turning off the unit from the front panel but leaving it plugged in is that the humidity of the room is always displayed.Obviously, you lose this benefit when you unplug the humidifier from the wall outlet.

When setting the unit to the automatic feature that enables it to operate like a thermostat, the unit may cycle on and off every few seconds or minutes depending on the humidity of the room, which means you'll hear the fan cycle on and off repeatedly.If this is likely to disturb you while sleeping, then just put the unit into manual mode as I find you can never have too much humidity in the winter anyway.Of course, make sure you have enough water in the tank to run all night.The tank is rated to hold water for 36 hours of continuous use.However, I have only been able to get 10 hours continuous use on a tank at the highest humidity setting - so keep this in mind when leaving the unit unattended.

I ordered the wick filters from the manufacturer because they are hard to find elsewhere; even though Wal Mart and other local stores carry the Holmes line, they don't necessarily sell all the filters for every model.The filters arrived promptly within a few days.

The box says the unit comes with a 5-year limited warranty but the pamphlet inside says a 3-year limited warranty.I called Holmes at 1-800-546-5637 and they confirmed it was actually a 3-year limited warranty, so don't be swayed by the box advertising.

There is one caveat that you might consider important, although this would not deter me from buying the unit.Since this unit is a tower model, it is easier to knock over (especially on an unsturdy surface such as carpet). You might want to take this into consideration in case you have young kids that run around or large pets that might wreck havoc in your house--meaning you may have to alter the placement of the unit to account for this scenario.My observation is that the chances of knocking this unit over are somewhat higher than the squat-to-the-floor models I'm so use to and which have been so ineffective.

Overall, I am very impressed with the unit compared to the four other humidifiers I've had previously.I had a Vicks humidifier, a different Holmes humidifier, a Hunter humidifier, and another one whose name I can't remember.I've always been less than satisfied, so this is a nice change. I've been so pleased with this unit that over six months later, I ordered a second one.

I like the size of this humidifier/vaporizor, but it is a little noisier than I expected.I could not find the filters instore anywhere, which was very annoying but I think I saw them at WalMart recently.We run the vaporizor almost 24 hrs a day since our baby girl was born 2.5 yrs ago and I have used 4 filters.It's good for white noise too.Just remember to run it dry each time to make the filter last longer and prevent mildew from growing in the container.

Vicks V4500 FilterFree Humidifier Review

I am suprised by all the negative reviews. We bought 1 for my oldest daughter last year (end 2006) as she had croup and it worked just fine. A few months ago my youngest daughter had also a cold and cough at the same time as my oldest so we went back to buy a second one.

We don't have mold issues (even though very often if it is not in use we forget to take the water out...and to take the water out is recommended)

It makes the room humid enough (windows are wet the next morning) the best thing for cold/coughing instead of dry air.

Yes it makes quit a lot of noise when it is running but it doesn't cause a problem for my 2 girls to feel or stay in sleep.

And yes we had the first time we used also the waterproblem as we didn't put it back right. But after that never had a problem again...

They are both still working!

Despite the expense of this item, I bought it because of the brand name I trust and the claims of low maintenance. Boy was I disappointed!
After one day of use, the water in the base was yellow with what appeared to be algae floating with it.I have had to empty out and scrub this unit every day to keep it clean (note that I use only filtered water to begin with!). Plus its awkward design makes it more difficult to clean than the cheaper models!
Also, even on low it is noisier than I expected with what I consider a "harsh" noise, and it doesn't humidify as big of an area as it claims (although it is adequate for a medium size bedroom).
Add to this poor customer service and you have one truly disappointing experience.

Essick Air 697-500 Variable Speed Humidifier Review

I received this item just before Christmas 2009.Our house was so dry I was slowly pruning. At 1500 sq.ft. on the main floor with 9 foot ceilings it keeps us quite comfortable and does the job. Have been running it straight since early December and no mechanical problems.Be aware of the following:

LOOKS:This cabinet model looks better on the website than in person. It is a darker brown than shown (not as orange) but still a pleasing colour. It is made of plastic and has a woodgrain pattern, but doesn't quite live up to getting away with it, mostly because of the slightly warped top vent (yes, vents from top, cannot put stuff on top of here without blocking the ventilation). Ours comes out of the plastic hinge at the back and does not seat well in all grooves, but probably not noticeable to guests.It needs to sit with it's back against a wall, as the back of the unit is not covered by a nice woodgrain cover, although it is brown plastic.You also notice the black filter hooked on the outside back sucking "filtered" air into the unit. My favourite part is it's on four wheels, so it is very easy to move and vacuum around on my wood floors.Unless you have shag rug, it should also be fairly easy to move on a short pile rug.

CONTROLS: It has two dials "humidity control" and "variable airflow".The humidity control does not go by numbers (i.e. 50% - 75%) so you don't really know the current level of your home; however it does allow you to set low / comfort zone / high arond the dial, and will toggle off when it reaches the desired humidity level set.We set ours 1/4 turn above the comfort zone and that works well.Note that setting it on high still doesn't peel your wallpaper, you can't even see the humidity coming out like you can on an ultrasonic BUT it does do the trick, as confirmed by the empty bottles I'm constantly refilling. The variable airflow dial goes from OFF/COMFORT ZONE (which starts immediately from off) to HIGH.This unit is LOUD!! When they say comfort zone they mean for your EARS.I only put it up to 12o'clock position (medium, I guess) when I'm out of the room, and any higher is just noisy with HIGH being like a battering ram.The comfort zone is best and since we situate it right by our kitchen/nook and living room we keep it low. (I know what you're thinking - we have taken it apart and rechecked our setup, it is correct with nothing unusual accidentally left inside, no real reason it should be this loud.Only thing I can think of is plastic rumbling on four wheels with the echo of our hardwood floors - maybe it won't be as much of an issue for you).

BOTTLES:There are two large 2.5 gallon bottles that rest on the left and right of inside cabinet.They are easy to fill and the unit comes with a tube to help you fill from your tap.Also comes with one small bottle of bacteriostatic additive to get you going.We use distilled water so we don't have the hard water build up in the bottom reservoir, you may want to use soft/distilled if you can get it or put an additive in to dissolve minerals.The bottles have handles on both top and bottom so when you turn them over to place them in it is easy to handle the weight.We don't spill any water when doing this and it's a great design.Also good are two "refill" lights that light up orange when each bottle is empty.They are easy to see through the grill on top as you're walking by, but not obtrusive.Very easy to refill while the other still is going, no need to turn unit off.

NOISE and PRICE: It's the only big drawback, and the price at $200 USD is steep for what it is.Would love to see real wood for that price, as there really isn't much to the unit but a small fan, filter, and plastic.

All in all, there aren't alot of different makes on the market to choose from, especially ones that don't look utilitarian.This will do what you're looking for but be aware if you have unusual dryness in your area and need to pump humidity with the control on HIGH, the noise from this baby will stop you from hearing your baby monitor and could keep you and baby up at night; otherwise, sleep soundly in the "Comfort Zone".Good luck with your purchase!

Honeywell HCM645 4 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier Review

I purchased the Honywell HCM-645 as a replacemnt for the Honeywell HCM-360.

I bought the #360 in Oct. 2005, and after about 4 weeks of operation the motor started to make a really bad rattling sound, Oh crap where is the receipt????? Can't find it!!!! Well, knowing that most stores won't return anything without a receipt if it's been used, I figured I would have to take advantage of the 5 year warrenty and contact the mfg. for a replacement. In the meantime I can't be without a humidifier so I went out and bought another one, same Mfg. (Honeywell)but a differant model to be on the safe side thinking if I go differant I shouldn't have any trouble......THINK AGAIN!!!!
I bought the HCM-645 on 11-15-05 and on this day 11-29-05, yes thats right 13 days later.....This motor has started to rattle, not quite as loud as the other but that won't last long.

I called the Mfg. about the one I had no receipt for and they wanted to charge me $10.00 for warrenty processing and I was to pay shipping cost both ways, estimated shipping cost would be $20.00 so for $30.00 they would send me a new humidifer. I paid $32.99 orginally does this make sense????. Well, I took the information on returning only to hang up the phone and call Wal-Mart just to see if they would take it back. Guess what? They had no problem in returning it for store credit and also took back the extra filters I purhased.

So my thought on Honeywell Humidifers, BUYER BEWARE, something is definatly wrong with the components in the motor operation in 2004 and 2005 models

Honeywell HWM330 Quick Steam Warm Moisture Humidifier Review

Clearly a lot of people have had problems with this unit.When mine failed after about 6 weeks of use, I dug into it to see what was up.It ends up that the overheat protection on this thing isn't real great.The first layer of overheat protection is provided by a sensor integrated into the heating element.I can't tell exactly, but it seems from the element manufacturer's literature (....) that the device sends a cut off signal between 250 and 300 C, per the chart on page 4.However, Honeywell used an NEC-Schott SF214E thermal cutoff as a backup device.This fails permanently if it's heated to 214 C.In other words, the backup, "sacrifice the machine and not the house it's in" device fails before the normal operation re-settable thermal cutoff.As a result, the device will probably stop working the first time it runs dry.Don't buy it.

When I received this humidifier, I was very pleased with the design, how efficiently it used water, and the fact that the UV light killed 99.9% of the germs. The noise emitted from the humidifier was minimal, but I found the blue light on the dial annoying. Still, that complaint was minor. All things appeared well until I awoke this morning to find that the towel the humidifier was sitting on was soaking wet. I've always been careful with placing a humidifier on furniture and never had a problem with one leaking. That all changed with this unit. Not only do I have a faulty unit, but now the top of my good wood furniture is ruined! I believe this humidifier hasn't been out too long, and I would recommend waiting to purchase it until all the kinks have been worked out!

I've had the unit for about 2 months now and have used it every single day and have not had any problems at all. The tank is easy to fill and carry. It holds about a gallon of water (I'm guessing). I leave it running all night on it highest setting and it takes about 12 hours for it to empty the tank. It is super quite, you can hardly hear it running. It shuts itself off when it is completely out of water.It produces a good output of water vapor too. Absolutely no leaks what so ever.There are two reason I did not give 5 stars.
1.) The power "on" indicator lamp is kind of bright. However, some black electrical tape over the lamp takes care of that problem for me.
2.) The power switch is not very ergonomically designed. It can be somewhat difficult to turn. I wrap a rubber band around the switch for better grip.
I would definitely buy this product again.

Vicks 1 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier Review

I bought this recently and set it up right away.The high setting is loud for sensitive sleepers but if you need white noise to fall asleep the humidifier can double as a sleep machine.It puts out a nice cool mist on both high and low.PROS: It has a nice design -- It is a solid performer -- It is easy to fillCONS: The tank and the wick cover sometimes are easily disturbed -- it is a little clunky -- the grill on the fan cover disperses the mist mainly in one direction when it looks as if it would be omni-directional. FINAL THOUGHTS: I recommend it highly but wish the wick was cheaper to replace (around 5 bucks 2 times a year) but considering the other ones on the market it is still a good buy.

Bionaire BCM6100U Bedroom Humidifier Review

I have purchased many humidifiers over the last 10-15 years as I have chronic sinus problems that are exacerbated by dry winter air. As you research the ratings of these appliances - you see that ALL models from ALL brands have glaring problems in their designs.

I like the styling and feature set of the Bionaire brand - I have purchased 3 in total... the model I liked best is no longer made - but i thought i would give these a try ----- If you have even remotely hard water and if you don't want to be constantly replacing MOLDY wicking elements ----avoid this style of humidifier technology.

They are terrible. And it is not Bionaire's fault - all brands fall prey to the fundamental flaw of this approach to humidity. A wad of paper soaking in water all day/all night. It's a shame because the Galileo remote hygrometer/control unit is very well thought out and the looks of these units are great.

It's just that wicking humidifiers are fundamentally the wrong approach. So until somebody make a wick that is impervious to both mineral deposits AND mold/mildew... don't waste your money.I liked my old warm mist Bionaire and I am considering one again. There is still a scale problem there, but it seems the least annoying of all the humidifier technologies in terms of performance, maintenance and byproducts like mold, white dust or scale.

As for Bionaire - I feel there products are well built, smartly designed, attractive, acceptably quiet, and built to last a long time. I just don't find the wick approach to be at all intelligent. too bad - maybe another model. Will let you know.

We own a small lodging operation (vacation rentals in private homes and cabins) here in Telluride, Colorado, and have used several of these units for years.We've had very good luck with them, and have had very good customer service from Medisana for replacement parts, etc.Our clients love these small "personal" humidifiers (but the unit is easily able to humidify a bedroom, for instance).

Working with these units regularly, we realized that when overfilled where the water feeds into the dispensing device, they won't work. No worries:pop the little cone where the moisture is dispensed, use a paper towel to soak up some water there -- confirm the water is below the waterline built into the unit there -- pop the little cone back on, and off you go!

For users who didn't discover this simple trick, it would appear the unit doesn't work at all. Hope this experience helps.

The unit is very small compared with typical humidifiers, and yet does a very good job, and then turns itself off.The small size allows placement on a nightstand without taking up nearly the same space as a conventional unit.Looks nicer too, and much, much easier to handle the large cone that has the water in it compared with conventional larger units (smaller, lighter, etc.).

One version has the timer;one does not. We've been using the non-timerunits; the fact that the unit shuts itself off when the water is gone is ideal in our applications.Some people might enjoy being able to set the unit with the timer to begin prior to their bedtime, and perhaps to turn off before the unit runs out of water, say, after two hours or so. Presume the timer units can be programmed for both start and stop times, but haven't tried them yet.

We have owned a number of humidifiers in the past.The last one we owned (& liked) was the now discontinued Vornado model (the ugly gray box w/ 2 water tanks and a fan that sat in the lid).This new version, solves some of the problems of the old design and creates new problems of its own.As another reviewer has noted, the beauty of the old system was its simplicity (read: fewer parts to clean).That simplicity, is gone.The design is completely different (and a little more like other brands).

The biggest improvement is the noise level.The old design made a loud gargling sound periodically as the air bubbled into the tanks. Further, the lid with the fan, sometimes did not sit right and made a buzzing vibration sound.

The new tank now has a filling cap that locks into the tank.There is a separate fancier spring loaded drain for water to move into the basin.The new tank does not sit flat on a surface when you try to fill it, which makes for bonus free isometric training for your biceps under the spout.Finally, there is no longer an option for two tanks, so more refill runs.

As for the rest of the design, there is now a physical separation between the evaporation chamber, and where the water tank is placed.At some level, this is nice, since you don't have to worry about bugs and other junk falling into the evaporation chamber.On the other hand, more parts to clean!You also have to be more vigilant about mold buildup inside the chamber since it is closed off and not visible on every refill.

On the plus side, the fan is more securely attached to the rest of the humidifier, thus reducing noise.

As far as humidification, it still works great.The fan is quieter and just as efficient (if not more).The fancy electronic humidification settings seem to work well and allow for less over-humidification (fewer refills).So in summary:
- quiet
- efficient
- not as simple a design as the older model
- more parts that will require careful cleaning.

Crane Cool Mist Humidifier, Leopard Review

I own five of these humidifiers.I own the Penguin, the Leopard, the Dragon, the Elephant, and the Frog.My favorite one is the penguin because his head is movable, you can turn the penguin's head in different directions to direct the moisture to different areas of a room. Of the five I own the penguin is the ONLY one you can do this with.Next, the leopard, the dragon and the elephant are nice units but you can not adjust the direction of the moisture, it is blown straight up into the air.These first four units I have described have a separate on/off switch from the moisture volume control knob.I really like this feature because you can set the moisture level and leave it when you turn the unit on or off.Which brings me to the last unit I own, the frog.The frog is like the leopard, dragon, and elephant in that the moisture is blown straight up into the air.However, the frog's moisture control is also the on/off control.I do NOT like this feature because you have to adjust the moisture level every time you turn the unit on or off.This is why the frog is my least favorite of all five of the units.

Vicks Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier Review

While this humidifier is spendy, it is quite worth it.
I have two of these humidifiers.

Pros:
1. High mist output - very clearly visible. It's like a fog machine! 'WOW!'
2. Mist volume control - many mist levels
3. Large water tank (20 hours of operation)
4. Direction control
5. Comes with it's own filter - but if you use distilled water you won't need to use the filter.

It's not silent but it is NOT loud by any means. I can sleep uninterrupted with it. My older humidifier produces the same noise level but my older humidifier produces a different frequency which disturbs my sleep. The Vick's is far superior to my old one.

Cons:
Like any humidifiers - you must keep it clean.
You have to keep the sonic agitator clean and free of dust/lint. A small bit of lint will negatively impact it's ability to produce high levels of mist. You don't even have to see the lint or dust.
Keeping the agitator clean is easy, don't touch it with bare hands - I only have to use running tap water on the agitator and it's dust/link free and it works like new every time.

Bionaire BU498-U Ultrasonic Personal Humidifier Review

When I first placed the unit in the room, it ran whisper quiet. After two weeks of constant nightly use, it "rattles" when misting; the seal between parts no longer holds because water now pours through the juncture of parts. I exchanged it. Again, the unit worked well at first, but now after three months, the "rattle" and leakage is evident. I am thinking that regular use wears the parts too fast, maybe if I only used it once in a while. At the very least, I do like the design and the ease of set up. It may even be worth a round of replacement parts.
