As a humidifier it works well but I'm on my 3rd one in as many weeks. The first one had a malfunction in the LCD screen and the 2nd one constantly shut on and off while it made a horrible growling noise. We'll see how #3 holds up. When its working it performs well but I am having doubts about the quality control. I'm sure it's another quality Chinese product.Amazon has been terrific to deal with.

#3 had a defect as well. The indicated room temp stayed at 32 degrees no matter what the actual room temp. I tried blowing warm air over the sensing unit but it stayed at 32. I think I'll live with it because the reviews on the other humidifiers are not very good. At least this one does not leak and performs well.

On 5-15 the third one failed. These things are junk.

Crane Dragon Cool Mist Humidifier Review

I had originally purchased a Holmes humidifier for about $25 at Target. It died on the second use. It had only two speeds, had a filter inside that took days to dry out, and it sounded like a freight train. White noise is great for helping a restless or sick toddler sleep, but this was ridiculous! It went back to Target and I purchased one of these instead (the penguin). I loved it so much I bought the dragon within days. This humidifier is everything the comparably-priced Holmes humidifier could never be.

This humidifier is nearly silent. It has only a very very slight background hum as it runs (great white noise). The mist is wonderful and dissipates quickly into the air. The knob on the front is to adjust the mist to exactly the right setting for you. There are no filters inside to clean. I've had it running non-stop except to clean it.

Speaking of cleaning, it's very easy to do. You definitely want to clean any humidifier you buy; the water in the basin will grow algae and have a bacteria bloom so clean it at least once a week. If you follow the simple directions in the box it takes maybe five minutes.

This is great for a bedroom. The room ours is in is about 12'x12' and it's wonderfully humid within an hour at maximum output.

The only thing that took me aback a little bit is where the mist comes out. With a dragon you'd think it would come out the nostrils or mouth, right? Nope . . .top of the eyeballs. I understand why it's there (to spray the mist as high as possible for maximum dissipation) but still, it looks a little weird. Ah well. I look a little weird too but I still function perfectly. ;)

Overall, you can't go wrong with any of the Crane animal humidifiers.

Vicks Ultrasonic Humidifier - V-5100-N Review

After reading several reviews of humidifiers that all gave mixed opinions I ignored all of them and picked up this humidifier at a local drug store for $32. This humidifier is small, approximately 11"Wx6"Dx13"H, making it suitable to put on the floor or on a counter. It consists of two main parts, a white plastic base and a clear blue plastic container. The base has two sliding switches. One turns the unit on/off and the other adjusts the amount of water vapor being released in to the air. The blue container sits on top of the base and has a handle on top and a round screw-on part on the bottom to fill the container. It also comes with a filter that goes in the base. There is a round piece on top of the container that turns to adjust and direct the stream of water vapor. Pros: 1. In my opinion it is quiet, much quieter than the Bemis wicking humidifier I previously had. The sound level is comparable to a table top fan. It does make water noises though which I find soothing but could be an annoyance. 2. It runs for a long time without refilling. On the lowest setting 1 container full of water will last a couple days of continous run time. On the highest setting, it needs to be refilled once a day. 3. It has no wick, which would start to smell in the old humidifier I had. 4. No chemicals need to be added to keep scum from growing in it. 5. You can see the water vapor being released in to the air (so you know its working). 6. See through container. You don't have to open anything to see how much water is left. 7. Container fits in kitchen sink to be refilled. 8. Relatively easy to clean. Cons: 1. It has no automatic shut off when the water runs out or when the air has reached the desired humidity. 2. When the container is picked up to be refilled it drips so you need a towel with you. When the unit is running, the water empties out of the container into the base where it is turned into water vapor. So when you remove the container the base is still full of water. 3. It needs to be cleaned regularly, once a week at least unless you don't mind the scum that grows on it. The base has corners that you need a Q-tip to clean. It is recommended that it be cleaned with a damp cloth and a bleach and water solution and then rinsed well. We have extremely soft water so I don't know how long the filter that comes with the humidifier will last or how well it works in places with hard water. I would recommend this humidifier.

Essick Air 821-000 Digital Control Evaporative Console Humidifier Review

I had been searching for a humidifier (or humidifiers) for my 1900 SF house, and was excited when I came across this model, as it was compact and not ugly like the console humidifiers I have seen.Floor space in my house is somewhat limited, so I liked the fact that its upright design would allow flexibility in placement.Also, I'd had good luck with Bemis in the past (had two H12 console units, in black, which for some reason Bemis no longer offers), so I thought I'd give this a try.My intent was to order a second one if it worked well, since the output ratings on humidifiers are generally quite overstated and I knew I would need more capacity.

What a disappointment!The unit only has two speeds, and the high speed is LOUD.Now, I know that in order to put a lot of moisture in the air youhave to have a pretty good fan blower, but this was ridiculous. Much louder than the H12 I'd had before. Also, the humidity setting only scrolls up, so you have to cycle all the way through to get back to the lowest setting.I guess that's really more of a minor annoyance, but it was disappointing nonetheless.

But the real problem was that the unit just plain didn't add moisture to the air.We left it running all night, and barely any water had evaporated by the next morning. In looking at the unit further, there is a major design flaw- unlike most humidifiers, which draw air into the unit through the wick (where it then picks up moisture), in this model the air is drawn in near the top, and also expelled at the top, while the wick is lower in the unit, so the majority of air just bypasses the wick.

I am returning this unit, and will have to bite the bullet and purchase another H12 console unit. I already own a Honeywell HCM-300T, but it's only rated 3 gallons per day and used in my bedroom at night.I am waiting for it to "die" because I don't like the fact that the cold air blows out of the BOTTOM of the unit, making an unpleasant draft on the floor.I did consider the Honeywell 6011i but don't like the fact that it has two water bottles (less convenient), and also the air blows out the side rather than the top.Bemis will get my business after all, but I can't believe they produced an inferior model like this.

My motivation for buying the Treatment was to increase the lifespan of the wick.I was only getting a few months life from a wick, using about two per winter.Using the Treatment, one wick is lasting more than one winter.

And the bottle lasts more than a winter, so it's worth it.

I hate to recommend W*lmart, but I bought my last bottle there for less than $2.That was still during the end of the humidifying season.Guess I should have bought two.I also bought their last half-dozen HM3600 humidifier wicks for $2 each (in July), when you couldn't find them for less than $12 anywhere on eBay.

I'll need another year to determine just how much longer the wicks are lasting, now that I'm on the Treatment.I just checked my wick.I think I used it for almost all last winter.It's just a little soft all over, but no serious deterioration.And no smell, just in case you're counting.

The instructions recommend adding a capful with every 3 gallons of water -- as a start -- and then after a while, you're supposed to determine whether your water needs more or less.I used a little less, and it still did the trick for my wick, apparently.My water is very soft.The instructions say harder water will require more Treatment.Granted, that's not a lot of guidance.

I didn't know if it's allowed to combine bactericide with the Treatment, so I didn't.Between the Treatment and being careful not to allow the humidifier to sit with water if it was turned off, the water never got smelly.

VENTA AIRWASHER LW24 Air Humidifier and Purifier All-in-one Review

At low speed you won't even know it's on and it's still quiet at med. and high speed too. We normally run it on medium or high speed when the weather is 35 or colder here in New England and turn it down to low if the temperature outside goes up or it's raining out. Doing this keeps the humidity in the house a pretty constant 40-45 per cent. We have a Colonial house and keep the upstairs bedrooms closed so the unit is just taking care of aboout 1100 ft. downstairs. I fill it in the morning and just before bedtime. They only hold a few gallons of water, but what a difference they make. We have had hardly any colds since we bought ours a couple of years ago, and we're not constantly having to put on lip balm or hand lotions like we used to. Your skin will thank you for it. But wait...there's more...hehe...Wait til you empty and clean it like I do every 2 weeks. The water you dump in the sink...unbelieveable what this unit takes out of the air. Remember, it's an air purifier too. It's amazing to see the junk that's in the dirty water. Stuff you would normally be breathing in.

It's light weight and small enough to be unobtrusive. I had a problem with mine the second year...called the company and within 3 days had a replacement part that was a snap to install, free of charge of course. Fantastic 10 year warranty.

Proof of how much we love this unit...the day it broke was a Sunday and dry as a bone...temp in the teens. Within an hour I was home from Bed and Bath with a new unit. Didn't even want to go 3 days without one running. Now we run them both on low speed most of the winter.
Check out their website...commercial buildings all over Europe use them as well as musicians with expensive wooden instruments to protect. Little known product just introduced to the US a couple of years ago. Highly recommended.

The Holmes Group HM5250UC Warm Mist Humidifier for Small Rooms Review

I would have rated this a 5 star if the cleaning was easier, but I do not know if such a humidifier exists.
We have hard water and the build up of scale was becoming a problem, even with daily cleaning (yes, you should clean this unit daily). I came up with a solution to reduce and almost eliminate the scale - I add a teaspoon of baking soda to the tank when I refill it. The scale is drastically reduced and the unit runs at a whisper quiet. I originally ran the unit without the baking soda and there was some noise, mainly gurgling, that was too loud for me since I am a light sleeper.

There is a black covered heating element that requires cleaning to remove scale. This can be very difficult to remove. I solved this as part of the weekly maintenance when you use vinegar to clean the base. The part with the heating element rests on the base. By adding enough vinegar to fill the well where the heating element engages with the base, and allowing it to soak for 10 or 15 minutes, the scale is easily removed.

I like the warm mist because it helps warm up the room.

Overall, I believe this unit is a great value.

I had to open the windows to air the room out because I didn't think inhaling the smell was a good idea. Essick Air 1051 AirCare Filter Review

This is supposed to filter the air on an Essick Air H-series console humidifier. In fact, it actually blocks the air to the unit and makes it much less efficient. It's an optional attachment to the unit and is completely unnecessary unless you live in a really filthy environment -- like maybe in a coal mine. Listen, we have three cats and I never saw any cat hair in the filter. The filter never got dirty. Does this tell you something?

Eva-Mist edv-2500i Ultra Sonic Humidifier with Digital Humidistat and Nightlight with 7 Colors Review

I researched humidifiers extensively and wanted to get one with a humidistat.The humidistat on this thing works reasonably well, but I've found that most humidistats built into the devices are not quite as accurate as those that are stand alone.But all-in-all, it seems to greatly increase the humidity of my bedroom and shuts off when the desired level is reached.
The electronic push-button features on this are easy to use and provide a reasonable array of features (e.g. timer, humidity control, volume of mist, etc.).This was important because I didn't want my humidifier to just run until the water went out.The night light colors are nice and sort of cool looking.
Also, the unit is very easy to fill and does not leak once you put the cap on and turn the upside down tank rightside up.The mist is fine and so far, I have not had any residue or build up with using tap water and the filter (I know this doesn't get rid of germs in the water, but oh well). Finally, this unit is very quiet.Outside of the occassional soft gurgle of water, it makes almost no noise.
The only negatives are that it comes with two packs of material in the tank which I couldn't figure out - don't know if those are used as part of the filter or just part of the packaging and the directions don't mention them at all.The other thing is that it once started beeping loudly when I took off the tank while the unit was on (almost like a smoke alarm), but went quiet as soon as I put the tank back on the unit.

The humidifier is very quiet on the low setting.There are only 2 fan speeds so it was kept simple.It has a very innovative design because there is no tank to remove and fill under the sink.Instead you can add water from the top using a pitcher.The replacement wicks are more pricey than the Vornado evaporative humidifier.The cost of the wicks is a concern if you let it run out of water because then the wicks will gather dust and need more cleaning or possible replacement depending on how long you have let it run empty.(I edited this review so I would have put 4 stars rather than the original 5 but the "edit review" features do not allow you to change the number of stars.)

We bought this humidifer for our daughter's room when she got her very first cold at 4 weeks old.It's been a sturdy little thing -- we've run it every night for months and it's very reliable.Doesn't leave puddles on the floor, makes a rather soothing white-noise sound, and the little "on" light isn't too bright.It really does run 18 hours or so if you fill up the tank and leave it on the LOW setting.Our last two humidifiers were lousy and left puddles, but I'd totally recommend this one.

We got one of these and three of the other air purifier -- the one that is topped with a green leaf.The plastic bottoms are interchangeable even though they are austensibly different products from different manufacturers -- one from Thermax and one from Harmony House.

We traded in our HEPA Silent Comfort air purifier because it is noisy and, while it works, doesn't cleanse the air sufficiently of cigarette smoke.We bought two of these to try in our 3,500 square foot house and immediately decided to buy two more.It's remarkably quiet and sitting two yards from a person smoking, I can't smell the cigarette.

In addition to a reduction in allergy symptoms -- red eyes and runny noses, we've noticed the increase in humidity has reduced the natural dryness that comes from living in the desert.We're still waiting,wondering and hoping we'll notice a reduction in the need to dust.It seems logical that these air purifiers would also trap the desert dust from the air.

This is a great product and we're very glad we tried it.

New Information:
We've had the purifiers almost a month. We noticed buildup under the hood from the water. It isn't easy to clean because the top -- the area where all the electronics are -- doesn't come apart. There doesn't appear any easy way to clean the hard water spots.

I wrote to the manufacture to ask if there a way to disassemble the purifier to clean the top.

AIR-O-SWISS 7133 Humidifier Review

I had been pricing and comparing the substantial number of humidifiers on the market and I am glad I settled on the Air-O-Swiss. Despite its higher price, I am quite satisfied with its functions, control, design and specifically, its quiet operation. I was looking to pay between $70-150 for a quiet, low-maintenance model to add humidity to my [very dry] 10x12' bedroom. I purchased it at a local store for the same price as listed on Amazon; I am glad I was able to see [and hear] this model in operation.

There is NO sound, even at the highest setting. I'm a light sleeper and cannot fathom a bedroom appliance that even approaches a dull hum.

The visible mist generated by this model is pleasant for me and my pets.

I have been refilling each morning, as I have had the device on a high setting and running nonstop.The compartment becomes about half-empty after a full day at this setting. Refilling is a snap.

The ability to have cool and warm settings is a big plus, since the jury is still out regarding the negatives and rewards of either mode.

The system has been running clean and I am certain this will continue to be the case with a modicum of effort. The cost of the filter and the silver stick is not intimidating and the recommended three-week maintenance check is reasonable.

The design is quite fetching. Minimalist and fetching.

I have it sitting on the floor and there is no dampness on the carpet as mentioned by owners of other brands. This tells me that this model is doing a good job of propelling the mist into the air.

My roommate recently paid $29 for a smaller Holmes humidifier. The Holmes is downright deafening and I am sure she would have paid the difference for an Air-O-Swiss. Silent operation is really important.

The only possible shortcoming is the hygrometer. It is not entirely intuitive: the machine is to shut off after the desired humidity percentage is met, yet I have yet to see the model shut itself off. Turning it off manually is not a big deal.

I took a big step purchasing an air purifier, but this purchase has made a significant difference in my bedtime and bedroom comfort. I've had some winter nights with seriously labored [allergy, smoke and pet-related] breathing but I find this device has given me a little peace of mind and tangible change.

Westinghouse WDD200 Humidifier with Aromatherapy, 1.2-Gallon Tank Review

While I have been using this humidifier for only about a week, it's lived up to its expectations so far. Other humidifiers from various brands get rave and not so rave reviews, and this one had none. That was probably a good sign... It is relatively small (the only reason I give it four stars is because it goes rather quickly through its water supply) which could be good if your room is not as dry as mine and you just needed it for some extra humidity. It is also very quiet, I only hear it at the highest setting and even then it is only a pleasant white noise together with some bubbling action from the tank (which is noticeable once in a while on any setting).

The fine cool mist that it produces is visible even at the lowest setting (however faint), and it never settles on the ground. In fact, the area around the unit stays completely dry, a good build. The unit is all plastic but of a very good quality for the price. Simple, straightforward construction, water tank manageable and not too heavy even when full and easily filled by turning it upside down and unscrewing the fill cap. It is rated for a 600sq foot room but due to its small size, if that room is already very dry (like in a desert climate), you would probably be doing a lot of refilling. I use distilled water, by the way, to keep the weekly cleaning to a minimum.

Haven't used the aromatherapy applicator yet but it looks really easy to use. The buttons do make a light beeping sound when pressed but it is a friendly beep. All buttons are clearly marked on the front and easily accessible. I followed the instructions by keeping it out of the box for 30 minutes at room temperature before starting to use it. By default, when you turn it on, it starts at the highest setting at 30% humidity, contrary to what the manual says (65%). Not sure yet how to change that because it works fine for me.

If Westinghouse is reading this, please note that the user of your product is, more likely than not , not an engineer and is also not likely to want to have to resort to magnifying glasses. Please print the manual in a larger typeface and make it userfriendly!

Holmes HWF75PDQ-U Replacement Wick Filter Review

This filter is just as good as the original. I have been using one of these filters for over 4 months now and there is no evidence of deterioration or mold whatsoever. I will offer two helpful hints to potential consumers: (1) Make sure you use an antibacterial additive in your humidifier every time you refill your reservoirs and (2) Always rotate your filter upside down each time you add water. This will GREATLY increase the lifetime of your filter. Also, the twin pack is a great buy!

Essick Air 4D7-800 Whole House Evaporative Humidifier Review

I have used it all this winter and it did the trick.My wife was suffering from nose bleeds and cracked skin before we bought this and now she is fine.It holds enough water to only need changed about every other day.The lights that tell you when the resivour needs changed can be seen from across the room.I run mine at the lowest fan speed and it is like it isn't there when the TV is on.With the room quiet you know its there but it isn't annoying.I was dissapointed with the airfilter.It looks like one on a furnace and is loosley attached to the back.It's deffinitly not HEPA quality if thats what your looking for.

Essick Air 696-400 Variable Speed Whole House Humidifier Review

The good news is, it humidifies. That's what I bought it for and that's what it does. The level of humidity is adjustable, allowing the unit to automatically cycle on and off as needed. And yes, you can adjust the fan speed, but getting it anywhere near the upper range makes it sound like a B29 taking off. IT'S LOUD! I leave it on med-low and it's not bad at all.

It has two plastic 2.6 gallon water bottles and at the med-low fan speed I use, I go through about 1 bottle per day. It keeps the rooms close to it quite comfortable, but rooms farther away don't get much. Your mileage will vary depending on humidifier location, floor plan, and normal air circulation.

As far as being built "sturdy" (as one reviewer pointed out), I have to disagree. The entire housing is made of plastic. Without the water bottles in it, it's so light that on a hard floor it easily rolls away with the lightest bump. Unless you are on carpet, I recommend NOT installing the castors that come with it. The weakest part of the whole unit is the stupid lid. It's constantly falling off it's hinges when I'm replacing the water bottles. It's just poorly designed.

I highly recommend buying the optional "air cleaner filter" (model #1051) that fits on the back. It helps clear your house of dust and pollen and also makes your internal wick last longer. For allergy sufferers, this is an absolute MUST.

Speaking of making wicks last longer, it wasn't until I read the owner's manual that I found out soft water is NOT recommended as it's supposedly not good for the wick. Oh well. The only NON-softened water I have is my outdoor hose and there's NO WAY I'm going out there every morning in the snow to fill my humidifier bottles!

All in all, I give it a 5 in performance, 4 in construction, and a 2 in convenience. (Hey, refilling and lugging 22 lbs of water every morning gets old!) Since performance is really what we want out of it, it gets an overall score of 4 stars from me.

BTW, use about 1/2 as much of the anti-bacterial additive as the bottle recommends and it does just fine.

Tropicaire Humidifier Air Exchanger Review

I was skeptical at first. Living in dry southern California, I've had a hard time CREATING, nevermind maintaining humidity. But the Tropicaire delivers on it's description. Unlike a cool mist humidifier that emits a stream of visible water vapor and can raise humidity to over 90%, the Tropicaire doesn't even look like air is emitting from it. However measure the RH (relative humidity) and it does maintain between 50-60% which is better than I was able to do with constant hand spraying. Plus there's the added benefit of circulating the stale humidified air. I'd give it 5 stars if there was a way to control the amount of humidity produced. Although you can purchase different air pumps and valves to control the air flow into the unit, it doesn't seem to affect the amount of humidity it's able to create. So if you need over 60% humidity, I don't think this would be enough.

RPS #1C 32OZ Humidifier Cleaner Review

I don't use this product to clean a humidifier but as a cleaning product.It takes hard water off of any surface like you would not believe.I sprinkle a little of this on on get some on a toothbrush.It bubbles and just eats away the hard water.You can then rub it with the toothbrush and it will general vanish.
Love this stuff,I've been using it to clean sinks, tubs, toilets, etc for many years.
