I purchased this because I wanted a stand alone mist fountain since I don't have much tabletop space in my living room.The fountain makes quite a bit of swirling mist on the high setting, though when placed in a corner, the mist mainly hangs over the bowl.To allow for more movement and optimal visual effect it needs to be placed further from a wall or in an area that doesn't restrict as much air flow.
The mist fountain makes a water trickling sound, soothing though subtle as compared to the regular indoor water fountain variety.Otherwise, the unit itself operates very quietly.More for visual ambience than sound effect.A side bonus is that it seems to work like a vaporizer in dry rooms when the heat is on.
